Celebrating our 29th Anniversary!
We were heartbroken to learn the news of the passing on June 30, 2024, of Chief of Patrol, Kevin Canavan. Chief Canavan passed away from complications of a 9/11-related cancer, due to his work in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.
A three-star chief, he began his 39-year law enforcement career with the Nassau County Police Department on May 31, 1985 as a recruit and rose through the ranks of Police Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Inspector, Inspector, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, and Chief of Patrol. As Chief of Patrol, he was the second-highest ranking uniformed officer and oversaw more than 2,000 members, both sworn and civilian.
He was a decorated officer who received many awards and citations for his dedication to the residents he served. Just two weeks prior to his passing, Chief Canavan received the 2024 Theodore Roosevelt Award for his tireless work ethic even when seriously ill.
Our hearts, prayers, and condolences go out to the entire Canavan family and their friends.

DownloadThe Theodore Roosevelt Association® Police Award is given each year to police officers who have overcome a major physical challenge or handicap, (as Theodore Roosevelt triumphed over the illness of his youth), who remain on active duty, and who have rendered outstanding and praiseworthy service to their respective police departments, continuing the example Theodore Roosevelt set in his years as Superintendent of the Board of Police Commissioners of New York City, 1895-1897.
Officers are chosen for this award by their respective police departments each June and honored at a ceremony held on the grounds of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Oyster Bay, New York.
The TRA Police Award consists of a silver medal on a ribbon, designed by renowned contemporary sculptor Marc Mellon. Most recently, the Presidential Inaugural Committee chose Mr. Mellon's design for the obverse of the Official Barack Obama Inaugural Medal.
The award includes a small red, white and blue commendation bar for everyday wear, a bust of TR by the noted sculptor Gleb Derujunski, and a check for $1,000.
